Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children Essay

Abstract Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects not only adults but also children. There are four major ways by which traumatic events may affect the psychological state of children: cognitively, affectively, behaviorally and psychosomatically. There are questions as to the sufficiency of the instrumentation used in determining and measuring of the disorder. Studies also show that the fear experienced by adults in seeing signs of aggression in children may be affecting adversely affecting the possible therapeutic benefits of normal child’s play and physical activity. There may be a need for programs specifically geared toward educating parents and primary care givers of children suffering from PTSD in how to handle and deal with the child’s disorder and psychological needs. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children as a Result of Violence, Crime and War It is not unusual for most adults, particularly those who are parents, to keep bad things away from children. As much as possible, childhood should remain a time of innocence and joy without the responsibility or care for matters that trouble the world. But what if it just cannot be avoided and bad things happen to children? In the aftermath of unhappy events, how do children display trauma and what are the things that people should know in dealing with children suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   For example, the September 11, 2001 terror attacks left behind families and children who have lost moms and dads in that instant. Even adults and children who were indirectly affected by the attacks have grown to suffer feelings of anxiety and shattered security in their personal and familial safety (Smith & Reynolds, 2002). Besides the inevitable feelings of grief, children especially were left behind and often contend with nightmares and morbid pictures of the traumatic deaths their loved ones experienced as well as the stress and difficulty of trying to picture lives without mom or dad. It is also important to remember that the effects of trauma are not limited to those who suffer it directly (Sims, Hayden, Palmer & Hutchins, 2000, p. 41) The ubiquity of television also afforded children at home not only news of the attacks but also vivid pictures and descriptions of the tragedy and all its violence. The case of a 7-year old boy named Johnny is cited in the study (2002) by Smith and Reynolds.: Following the 9/11 attacks, Johnny developed a constant fear of his parents leaving home and getting killed by â€Å"bad men.† He also developed a phobia of elevators and would throw tantrums whenever his parents tried to make him use one. Johnny admitted to his therapist that his fear of elevator stemmed from a story he heard of how â€Å"people in the Twin Towers were trapped and killed while riding in the elevators.† (Smith & Reynolds, 2002)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Neither Johnny nor his family were directly involved or affected in the terror attack. The mental and emotional strain suffered by survivors and those affected by this very high profile event led to the American Psychiatric Association’s setting up of counseling services â€Å"focusing on grief, acute stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Smith & Reynolds, 2002). What is PTSD? Originally associated with survivors and veterans of the Vietnam War, PTSD refers to an impairment of an individual’s capability to function in everyday following exposure or experience of an exceptionally disturbing event. Besides war, this has grown to cover the ill mental and emotional effects of â€Å"natural and civilian catastrophes, criminal assault, rape, terrorist attacks and accidents.† (Murray, 1992, p. 315) The DSM IV presents a more broadened definition of traumatic exposure as â€Å"the person experienced, witnessed, or was confronted with an event or events that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others,† and which evoked â€Å"intense fear, helplessness, or horror† (Mcnally, 2003). This broadened definition also qualifies extreme horror at what other people’s experience or events outside their environment as possible causes of PTSD. Symptoms of PTSD include vivid and morbid imagery, numbing, disruptions in thoughts and cognition, delayed response and reaction, strong feelings of anxiety, persistence of nightmares and difficulties in dealing with and solving problems. (Foa & Meadows, 1997) Saylor and Swenson, et.al state that before the late 80’s there was minimal attention given to how children were affected by traumatic events. It took two powerful hurricanes, one devastating earthquake and the bombing of the Oklahoma Center before it was realized that there were very little preparedness in ministering to the psychological needs of traumatized children   (Saylor, Swenson, Reynolds & Taylor, 1999, p. 70). In 1999, psychologist Barbara Lowenthal pegged the number of children in America being exposed to traumatic events each year at four million. These traumatic events include â€Å"physical, sexual and emotional abuse; neglect; accidents; severe injuries; and natural disasters.† Lowenthal also says that these children are at a high risk of suffering from PTSD and may cause them to be prone to developing phobias and other neuro-psychiatric disorders including anxiety and depression (Lowenthal, 1999). The National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (NCPTSD, 2001) reports that there is a higher likelihood of psychological symptoms associated with PTSD to be found among children who have experienced traumatic events before the age of 11 compared to those who suffer trauma at later ages. (Alat, 2002) Lowenthal also says that besides the general symptoms of PTSD, children who have suffered trauma are likely to develop difficulties in forming relationships, cognition and learning, as well as a â€Å"numbing† that may make affected children experience difficulty in understanding and expressing their feelings in addition to regulating their emotions. This often leads to â€Å"provocative behaviors† and avoidance of intimacy. (Lowenthal, 1999). In his article in the Journal of Multi-cultural Counseling and Development in 2004, Clinical psychologist and Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) Gargi Roysircar studied the case of 20-year old Yugoslavian à ©migrà © Stephen, who at the age of 10 witnessed the height of the civil war between Christians and Muslims in Kosovo in 1990. Stephen remembers witnessing about 80% of his classmates get killed by bombs, sniper shots and gunfire as they walked to and from school. At age 14, Stephen was taken by his father to the frontlines and be trained in combat to fight with the Serbian army. The next two years wold take Stephen all over the Balkans and would expose him to all kinds of privation and war atrocities. Eventually migrating as political refugees in the United States, in 1999, Stephen demonstrated difficulty in acculturation and adjustment. The constant displacement he experienced in war along with the mistrust bred by his past and cultural paranoia fostered by the Croatian community they lived with made it difficult for Stephen to acclimatize to peacetime setting.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Roysircar describes Stephen as having â€Å"recurrent thoughts and images of his violent experience in the Balkans. He experienced nightmares, hostility and a profound sense of a lack of belonging. Stephen also often recounted the difficulties he experienced including â€Å"hiding in a basement and eating rats† especially when angry. He also displays a deep-seated hatred for the Muslims and believes â€Å"the Middle East should be wiped off the face of the Earth† (Roysircar, 2004).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This kind of behavior can very well be treated as expected according to an study published in the Australian Journal of Early Childhood in 2000. The researchers posit that in war-torn times, children are forced to adjust out of necessity for survival. This experience develops the idea of a dangerous world where no one can be trusted and therefore prompts children to be the aggressor rather than the victim (Sims, Hayden, Palmer & Hutchins, 2000, p. 41). According to Vazquez there are many conditions that fit the general description of PTSD. There are however differences in â€Å"depth, complexity and intensity† that require appropriate and often differing treatments (Vazquez, 2005). In Stephen’s case, the therapy method that worked for him involved deep self-reflection and existential therapy sessions with his counselor where he was able to open up and tell stories of his experiences and thoughts of his past and present, and dreams for the future (Roysircar, 2004). Effects and Treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder It is important to remember that not every child who is exposed to or experiences trauma develops PTSD. Since the 1980’s there has been marked growth in the development of instrumentation in the measurement and treatment of PTSD in children. These assessment methods designed for children of different age groups include â€Å"structured interviews, questionnaires, self-report scales, inventories, and psychophysiological evaluation † (Alat, 2002) There are four major ways by which PTSD can affect children: cognitively,affectively, behavioral and physiological-somatically (Lowenthal, 1999; Alat, 2002). Cognitively, children experience fear at a possible repetition of the traumatic event. Some may even feel responsible for the traumatic event’s occurrence. There may also be confusion, academic and developmental problems, lowered IQ and diminished abilities in language and communication. In its affective effects, children with PTSD become emotionally fragile and are given to fits of outburst and anger. They develop low thresholds for stress and fear. They become nervous, compulsive and often feel a sense of futility. Behaviors can also become extreme. Affected children may become either very loud or very shy. It is not unusual for children to revert to juvenile behavior such as thumb sucking or regression in academic knowledge. They may also develop self-destructive behavior and become vulnerable to alcohol, drugs, and self-abuse. Children may also manifest PTSD in the form of physical sickness such as high temperatures, â€Å"vomiting and headaches†(Alat, 2002). There may also be instances of sleep and eating disorders, fatigue and â€Å"biochemical alterations in the brain† (Alat, 2002) Family members and teachers generally notice these symptoms first. At this time, it is important that both come together and develop ways of supporting the affected child. A school counselor may be able to help evaluate whether a child indeed has PTSD or not. Therapy with a professionally trained psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor or therapist is the treatment for persons diagnosed with PTSD. The methods employed however, may vary according to the severity of the disorder as may be observed in the individual. Majority of the suggested therapies that parents and educators are encouraged to employ with children suffering from PTSD are physical and social expression/reflection through group and one-on one interaction as well as play based therapies (Alat, 2002). This particular therapy however has encountered difficulties particularly after the 9/11 attacks and the idea that aggression addressed in the earlier stages will stave off future violent behavior. For example, a child who builds a tower of blocks and flies an airplane into them may be viewed as at-risk for future violence. This child’s behavior, in fact, may be a healthy and developmentally appropriate way to gain mastery over the child’s fears, anger, and confusion about Sept. 11. Smith and Reynolds (2002) decry this repression of a child’s possible â€Å"venting† or anger and state that instead of suppressing the aggression manifested by children at play, parents and educators should let children be within certain limits. As long as children do not cause harm to themselves, others or objects within their surroundings, it is best that they be allowed to express their anger and whatever negative feelings they have in a â€Å"therapeutic manner.† (Smith & Reynolds, 2002) Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The researcher observes that while there is an acceptance and awareness of the existence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder among children, there still seem to be a lot of confusion as to what are the indicators of such disorder as well as the methods by which it should be addressed and treated. While Lowenthal (1999), Alat (2002) and other psychologists have managed to simplify such symptoms in four main categories, it is also stated in most studies that childhood trauma does not necessarily result in PTSD. There is still a question as to how the average lay person may be able to distinguish between delayed PTSD and natural defiance and common anxiety. The researcher also noticed that several of the symptoms listed in determining PTSD can also be found listed as symptoms of other psychological disorders in the DSM IV. The only difference is that with PTSD, there is a requisite traumatic event that is supposed to act as a trigger for the disorder. Smith and Reynolds (2002) make a valid point as to how adult paranoia of events that could possibly happen could seriously hinder the coping mechanism of children and therefore cause more harm than good. Logic dictates that feelings left unexpressed often come out one way or another. Alat also makes a good suggestion in encouraging teachers /educators to help children express their feelings in group discussions. As adults benefit largely in group therapy, there is no reason why children should not be able to do the same. Recommendations   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Despite its many advancements in instrumentation and awareness, there are still many gray areas in how people can support and help children suffering PTSD. The researcher recommends that further studies be done with the objective of clarifying and further distinguishing PTSD symptoms from other psychological disorders so that those affected may receive the appropriate treatment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The researcher further recommends that programs designed to educate teachers, primary care givers and parents in the impact of PTSD on children as well as the many ways they can help support the child’s treatment. Most of the child’s time is spent with family and school. It may perhaps speed up progress of therapy is extended beyond the time they spend with their clinical therapists.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There is the observation that adults may feel fear at what they perceive to be early signs of violence and aggression. The very fact that this sort of thinking exists stands as proof that attention to educating the people in a child’s environment with regard to what is natural and not in children’s behavioral patterns must be emphasized. Constant communication between parents and other people their children interact with particularly in the period following a traumatic event may also be helpful in gauging any effects the vent may have had.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Children exhibiting changes in behavior must also be carefully observed. As in the case of little Johnny who suddenly developed a fear of elevators, there may just be something behind the changes in a child’s behavior. Forcing them to face fears without completely understanding the root of these fears may only cause irreparable damage. These are just a few things that psychologists and behaviorists must educate parents and the other people in close contact with a child possibly suffering from post traumatic stress disorder in. Emily Dickinson’s “A Certain Slant of Light” Analysis Essay Essay

In her poem, There’s a certain Slant of light, Emily Dickinson uses metaphors and imagery to convey the feeling of solemnity and despair at winter’s twilight. The slanted light that she sees, is a metaphor for her battle with depression. Anyone who is familiar with Dickinson’s background will have a better understanding of what she is trying to say in this poem. Dickinson was known as a recluse and spent most of her life isolated from the outside world. The few people that she did come in contact with over the years are said to have had a major impact on her poetry. Although, her main muse of her work seems to be despair and internal conflict. What’s interesting about the poem is that Dickinson uses metaphors to describe depression, as well as religion. It is clear that the poet intends to highlight the light in the afternoon with its heaviness and solemnity. The time of year that the poet is describing is winter, while the time of day is twilight, or the afternoon, as said in the poem. Often times, and how I’ve interpreted it, the season, plus the time of day can be considered a metaphor for death. In Dickinson’s, There’s a certain Slant of light, she used a metered rhyming scheme that follows the pattern of ABCB. Since the poem uses rhyming, it’s closed form. There are four stanzas that almost have a hymn-like rhythm. It’s unclear if that was intentional or not due the religious metaphors within the stanzas. Dickinson used trochaic and iambic meters through out the poem. She also used stressed and unstressed syllables. The opening line of the poem, states the title and at the same time, introduces what the poem is essentially about. The poet goes on to say that the winter light, which slants in through the windows, weighs upon the speakers soul like â€Å"the Heft of Cathedral tunes.† Organs, with their multiple pipes, strike ears and fill Cathedrals with a sound that often leaves you with a feeling of unwelcome solemnity and grandiosity. This can leave listeners with an overwhelming feeling that lays heavy in their being. The image of winter, as well as the organ music, adds gloom to the poem. There’s a sense of anguish that the speaker is feeling and you believe that a certain slant of light might connote hope, but not even sunshine on a winter afternoon could bring happiness into the speaker’s life. Winter itself is a symbol of death and decay, opposed to summer, which is characterized by sunshine and joy. Like the Cathedral tunes, the light reminds her of desolation. The feeling of despair is transported into an auditory feeling, which is where the organs come in. The word â€Å"heft† has two meanings, weight and significance. It can refer to the cathedral tunes, and also the speaker being weighed down by despair. In the second stanza, the light oppresses her soul; it gives her a â€Å"Heavenly Hurt.† The experience of slanted light is a metaphor for ideas and how it feels to experience depression. This kind of heavenly hurt leaves no scar behind, but it creates an internal difference that brings a change in demeanor. The phrase â€Å"Heavenly Hurt† brings together a feeling of elation and the reality of what the speaker is feeling. The alliteration of this phrase is used as an emphasis. In the third stanza, the first two lines are, â€Å"None may teach it – Any – ‘Tis the Seal Despair -† This is saying that no one is able to teach us what death feels like. We can prepare for it, in the sense of what we believe will come after, but the actual physical and mental feeling is unknown. Death is very unpredictable in the way that we don’t know how our lives will end, but it’s on everyone’s mind. In the line, An imperial affliction, Sent us of the Air – (11-12) the speaker has made a connection with the winter light, the â€Å"Heavenly Hurt†, and the feeling of internal difference and despair. In Dickinson’s poem, an imperial affliction is a metaphor for an all-encompassing despair that comes from the air. Whenever we have a strong emotion, like happiness, we tend to see the world around us in a brighter light and over all it makes us feel joyful. If we’re feeling down, like the speaker of this poe m, we see the world as how we feel inside; things look unpleasant, and grey and dismal. We’re unable to see a ray of hope that is coming through the window in the form of sunshine. In the fourth stanza, when death, or â€Å"it† as the speaker calls it, comes everything listens. When someone dies, those still on this earth sometimes experience stillness in nature, as if the world is on hold and listening to us. In Dickinson’s poem the stillness comes from the slant of light, and the landscape and shadows listen and figuratively hold their breath. The landscape and shadows are personified in this stanza. The capitalization of â€Å"Landscape† and â€Å"Shadows† gives the impression that the speaker is referring to someone she knows. The mood here changes quite a bit compared to the first three stanzas of this poem. You get a sense of anticipation instead of despair, and the oppression that the speaker has felt has lifted and now she’s feeling light and maybe some what alluring. In the final two lines of the poem, the poet uses sort of a morbid imagery. â€Å"When it goes, ‘tis like the Distance, On the look of Death.† (15-16) Dead people have a distant look to them since the life in their being is gone somewhere else. We also see the exit of winter light at the end of the day in the same distant way we might see some deaths. Death is mysterious to those on earth, just as the sunset in the heart of winter is. The day is blanketed in shadows due to the sun’s proximity to earth during this season, and as it sets, it’s a gradual process, that sometimes leaves the world at a standstill, much like death. The dash at the end serves as emphasis that a period wouldn’t leave behind. As readers, we’re left with no definitive answers in regards to the light or the speaker’s internal despair. Dickinson almost made this intentional in a way that the reader might feel an equal despair or oppression at the outcome of the poem, or the â€Å"light† might leave us with a feeling of enlightenment and hope. At the end of this poem, we’re left with a feeling of despair, that Dickinson almost made intentional in order for the reader to better understand how the speaker feels as the light breaks through the windows on winter afternoons. Lehman Brothers Failure Questions Essay

Having taken part to the events occurring in this scenario only in a few occasions, and as the ultimate guarantee of rescue, the FED,in conjunction with FDIC and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, made decisions aimed to save those institutions, for instance AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose failure would have had a greater impact on financial system’s wealth and perspectives of recovering from the crisis were reliable. This was the main reason for declining any proposal of action in favor of Lehman. Some argued that the company’s bankruptcy was an intentional choice rather than a â€Å"genuine error†, aimed to induce the restoration of higher degrees of financial discipline. However, had the government disposed a plan in favor of Lehman Brothers, this would have prevented investors from losing faith towards financial institutions, the financial system from freezing and economy from carrying the weight of the crisis Notwithstanding, further attempts to save Lehman Brothers did not came to completion for several reasons, not only due to Government stillness, but the giving out of other financial actors i. . Bank of America and Barclays. In an ultimate analysis is thus important to consider that the â€Å"unfair† practices were not carried on by the sole Government, but by all financial institutions acting in the system as a whole: every actor placed a risky bet, whose consequences seem difficult to be addressed to just one responsible. Do you think that the U. S. government should have allowed Lehman Brothers to fail? Although Lehman Brothers was the fourth-largest U. S. investment bank, it was seen by many analysts as the weakest of Wall Street’s biggest firms. It is plausible therefore to think that the government willfully took the decision to let it go bankruptcy, in the purpose to restore a certain degree of indipendence from the market, and serving as threat for other institutions preventing them from adopting hazardous behaviours. The government decision of non-intervention had immense costs both in terms of financial losses inflicted to the credit market operators and institutions, and of lost in confidence in the market itself, that eventually turned into terror and paralyzed the credit market worldwide. Indeed investors’ confidence in th market and general concerns about the security of the banks continued to plumb during Lehman Brothers’ stock value erosion and afterwards. Nonetheless, consequences from Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy had spread in a broader sense affecting all clusters of stakeholders: for instance, it could be mentioned the forced lay off of up to 1,500 people, which amounted to about 6 percent of Lehman’s work force. With hindsight, the decision of the US Government to allow such a giant as Lehman to fail is difficult to support, especially considering the devastating negative impact it had in a long-term perspective. Almost no objection that it should have been a critical decision to take at that time. It indeed brought the evidence that the financial market needed a shock, which unveiled some crucial problems and send a clear message to the banking system, proving that â€Å"too big to fail† companies were likely to face collapse as well, though no one would have believed this before. Many experts argue that when the government bails out a private financial institution it creates a problem called â€Å"moral hazard,† meaning that if the institution knows it will be saved, it actually has an incentive to take on more risk, not less. What do you think? Moral hazard, or, in other words, the willing of companies to act recklessly, bearing large risk exposure, has the consequential effect of distorting competition, thus mitigating risk perception and allowing excessive risk-taking, which is ultimately transferred from financial institutions to the society as a whole. The core of the debate was to what extent did moral hazard caused the crisis, and to what extent did government’s guarantees of rescuing perpetuated an hazardous behavior among market players. The moral-hazard argument is not only due to eventual interventions from governments, but is increasingly being considered by expertise as an inner element of a company’s strategic policy, drawing the shape of the decision making process in the interest of the company itself. However, corporate decisions are rather made in the interests of individuals than for the company as a whole, which causes a loose the connection between those interests and the company’s long-term health assumption. The possibility to gain short term benefits, at a relatively low cost, leads to reckless behavior regardless of eventual bails out from governments, with long term costs that hardly find responsibles to pay them back. The ideas that he proffered are applicable in making managerial decisions in an organization, as well as decisions that we make in our everyday struggles in life. The first point that struck me is the importance of developing a mission statement. I believe in his idea that a principled leader should develop a mission statement that is short, simple, generic and easily memorized so that every employee understands it and accepts it as a guiding principle resulting in its successful implementation in the organization. Having a clearly defined mission statement will prevent companies from having employees who are unclear of their company’s priorities and goals. Even as individuals, I realized that having a mission statement is a must if we want to succeed in life. Another important aspect in Covey’s book which I think will have an impact in my leadership style is the relevance of having clear communication lines in an organization. I became more aware that every employee no matter how far below they are in the hierarchy of the organizational structure must have a voice in the company. As a leader, I will try to always have an open ear to the ideas of my employees and try to develop a personal relationship with them. Covey however stressed that leaders must also learn to strike a balance between logical and emotional and sympathy and empathy to become effective communicators. My favorite chapter in Covey’s book is Chapter 11 which discuses the thirty methods of influence. According to Covey, the best way to influence the consumer’s lives is to model by example, build caring relationships, and to mentor by instruction. I particularly took notice of no. 4 which is the â€Å"performance of anonymous service†. It reminded me of a gospel passage from Matthew 6: 3-4 which states, â€Å"In giving alms, you are not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Keep your deeds of mercy s ecret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.† Although I have known this passage previously, as a leader, I did not realize that selfless service, that is, not expecting any reward from serving others, would redound to a positive influence among my co-workers.

Lady Macbeth is shown as the more dominant figure with lots of power and is manipulative and a unnatural character. However after the murder of King Duncan she is overwhelmed by the guilt and begins to lose power, and is less manipulative over Macbeth. Lady Macduff on the other hand is the complete opposite of Lady Macbeth and the witches and is portrayed as being a stereotypical women from the eleventh century. She has very little power and perceived as being a normal female of the time. At the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth is a strong, powerful and manipulative person and she is more controlling than her husband Macbeth. Generally in the eleventh century, males are more domineering and powerful over females but that was not the case in Macbeth. However towards the end of the play and after the killing of King Duncan she is overwhelmed by guilt and losses all her power and Macbeth appears to be the more dominant character. She becomes more natural and less manipulative after her guilt catches up with her. Throughout the play the 3 witches are portrayed as having ultimate power and are very unnatural in the way they use magic and prophecy to control and manipulate characters such as Macbeth whom they control through addicting him through prediction of his future which he completely believes they have the power to do. At the beginning of the play the witches greet Macbeth as Thane of Glams, Thane of Cawdor and as King of Scotland. This prophecy leads Macbeth to genuinely think about being in control and having power. After Macbeth received the news that he was Thane of Cawdor he built a trust with the Witches as he now believes they were right about everything. Macbeth continued seeing the witches to see what his future will hold, speak, I charge you. The Witches therefor are very powerful, in the way they control Macbeth and manipulate him in his desperation for power. Of course, the simple-minded assumption here is words that other people understand can be understand by others too. These can be applicable, when particular word containing absolute meaning. This is because each word gives unique effect to a person. The consequence is the person will try to relate the word based on their unique experience. Few differences can be tolerated but it will cause misunderstanding when we try to interpret most of the word in our own definition and experience. It will become a severe problem when senior worker use any word or term in conversation which based on experience with their junior worker. If the junior worker does not have the same experience as the senior worker, then the words is pointless. The worst case is the junior worker may silently make the word match with a difference experience. There are few strategies can be taken to create a good listening. A good listener will listen not only to what is being said, but also to what is left unsaid or only partially said. Listening involves observing body language and noticing inconsistencies between verbal and non-verbal messages. For example, if someone tells you that they are happy with their life but through gritted teeth or with tears filling their eyes, you should consider that the verbal and non-verbal messages are in conflict, they maybe dont mean what they say.   Listening requires you to concentrate and use your other senses in addition to simply hearing the words spoken.  Listening is not the same as hearing and in order to listen effectively you need to use more than just your ears. 1. Stop Talking If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two tongues and one ear. Mark Twain. Dont talk, listen.   When somebody else is talking listen to what they are saying, do not interrupt, talk over them or finish their sentences for them.   Stop, just listen.   When the other person has finished talking you may need to clarify to ensure you have received their message accurately. 2. Prepare Yourself to Listen Relax.  Focus on the speaker.  Put other things out of mind.   The human mind is easily distracted by other thoughts whats for lunch, what time do I need to leave to catch my train, is it going to rain try to put other thoughts out of mind and concentrate on the messages that are being communicated. 3. Put the Speaker at Ease Help the speaker to feel free to speak.   Remember their needs and concerns.   Nod or use other gestures or words to encourage them to continue.   Maintain eye contact but dont stare show you are listening and understanding what is being said. 4. Remove Distractions Focus on what is being said: dont doodle, shuffle papers, look out the window, pick your fingernails or similar. Avoid unnecessary interruptions.   These behaviours disrupt the listening process and send messages to the speaker that you are bored or distracted. 5. Empathise Empathy is a selfless act, it enables us to learn more about people and relationships with people it is a desirable skill beneficial to ourselves, others and society.   Ã‚  Phrases such as being in your shoes and soul mates imply empathy empathy has even been likened to a spiritual or religious state of connection with another person or group of people. I call him religious who understands the suffering of others. -Mahatma Gandhi Try to understand the other persons point of view.   Look at issues from their perspective.   Let go of preconceived ideas.   By having an open mind we can more fully empathise with the speaker.   If the speaker says something that you disagree with then wait and construct an argument to counter what is said but keep an open mind to the views and opinions of others. 6. Be Patient A pause, even a long pause, does not necessarily mean that the speaker has finished.   Be patient and let the speaker continue in their own time, sometimes it takes time to formulate what to say and how to say it.   Never interrupt or finish a sentence for someone. 7. Avoid Personal Prejudice Try to be impartial.   Dont become irritated and dont let the persons habits or mannerisms distract you from what they are really saying.   Everybody has a different way of speaking some people are for example more nervous or shy than others, some have regional accents or make excessive arm movements, some people like to pace whilst talking others like to sit still.   Focus on what is being said and try to ignore styles of delivery. 8. Listen to the Tone Effective speaking has nothing to do with the outdate concept of elocution where everyone was encouraged to speak in the same correct manner.   Rather, effective speaking concerns being able to speak in a public context with confidence and clarity, while at the same time reflecting ones own personality. Volume and tone both add to what someone is saying.   A good speaker will use both volume and tone to their advantage to keep an audience attentive; everybody will use pitch, tone and volume of voice in certain situations let these help you to understand the emphasis of what is being said. 9. Listen for Ideas Not Just Words You need to get the whole picture, not just isolated bits and pieces.   Maybe one of the most difficult aspects of listening is the ability to link together pieces of information to reveal the ideas of others.  Ã‚   With proper concentration, letting go of distractions, and focus this becomes easier. 10. Wait and Watch for Non-Verbal Communication Gestures, facial expressions, and eye-movements can all be important.   We dont just listen with our ears but also with our eyes watch and pick up the additional information being transmitted via non-verbal communication. Do not jump to conclusions about what you see and hear. You should always seek clarification to ensure that your understanding is correct. Non-verbal communications include  facial expressions, the  tone and pitch  of the voice,  gestures  displayed through  body language (kinesics)  and the physical  distance between communicators (proxemics). These non-verbal signals can give clues and additional information and meaning over and above spoken (verbal) communication.

Teaching Philosophy Teaching is a profession that can only be defined by those who are in it, and no two teachers will ever give the same answer. Over the past few weeks I feel that my philosophy on teaching has changed drastically. Students look up to their teachers, they look to learn and to have a companion. The students have a thirst for knowledge. I always thought that students would dread coming to math, but many look forward to it. For me, math has always been a strong point and a subject that I have enjoyed and I look forward to being able to share my love with my students. My goal is to be successful. Successful to me means to be able to change the life of at least one student. To be an inspiration to those that I teach. To share a love for a subject that most students hate. To touch at least one student’s life and know I made a difference. I want to be one of those teachers that students are excited that they have. I want to make math fun and have a good time doing it. My goal is to be the teachers that I admire. To be able to become the teachers that I have admired there are several ways to go about it. Cooperative learning strategies are a huge help in having the students learn mathematics. There are many different methods that will assist in the education of the students. Of all of the different strategies, the ones that I have found to be the most useful are random reporting and the roundtable. These methods have all students participating equally and not able to â€Å"slack off† when working in a group. All students must be ready to answer and pay attention fully in order to be successful in the lesson. There are certain ways of going about teaching math that will make it interesting for students. Finding a way to grasp a student’s attention and relate the subject matter to their lives would make the class more enjoyable. This leads into my belief of what a good teacher is.

Feld, in The First Seven Years, finds that he has to let go of several of his own issues to allow his daughter to undergo her own growth and learning. He believes that ,as a farther, he can make her life perfect simply by telling her the necessities of life. However, after several incidences Feld understands that he must learn to let go. Personal Narrative- Using Art to Escape Boredom Essay -- Personal Narr

Quite often different people I come across commend me on my creative ability to draw and paint. The observer's comments usually include the question "Where did you learn how to draw like that?" I normally tell them some generic answer like "a lot of practice, " but truthfully my response should be "in my miserably boring childhood." However I usually refrain from being that honest to either avoid a weird look or to avoid a lengthy explanation like the one that follows. Compared to some of the horrible stories of child abuse I've heard, my childhood was a Walt Disney fairytale, but in my own eyes I was an unhappy kid. I was born in 1972, which is the Chinese Year of the Rat (the rat's Chinese characteristic is to scavenge for survival, which is also a part of my personality). From old pictures, my fragmented memories, and tales told by my grandma Mildred, I was close to my parents during my first six or seven years, especially my dad. My dad, Richard, was employed straight out of college as an Aerospace engineer with the Logicon Corporation (where he still works to day). He married my mom, Loretta, (who also became an Aerospace engineer for Logicon) seven years before I was born. My parents fought almost every night as far back as I can remember, and I can still recall covering my ears with a pillow to escape their bickering. I've always sort of believed that it was my mom's fault, possibly because her voice was always the loudest screech I c ould hear. I know the blame should rest equally between them, but my mother was always so demanding and emotional while my dad was a quiet man who was able to control his anger unless really pushed. I think she was used to a lot of emotions in her past and would intentionall... ...e, I was already set into an isolated lifestyle. I could never get back to the family closeness I had felt as a small child, and since I never grew up with anyone I went to school with, I didn't have much in common with them. Out of my well-developed personality as a loner I became a talented (so I'm told) artist in an effort to self entertain and distract me from my lonely life. Although I never had any imaginary friends growing up, I did have an imaginary world, in which I built with Legos and drew with pictures. These imaginary worlds I escaped to from my boring (poor little rich girl) childhood, not only comforted me but allowed me to develop the creative skills necessary to be an artist. From some people's definition my childhood may not have come close to miserable, but to a sheltered twelve-year-old there is nothing more miserable than being bored and alone.

Last three paragraphs of “The Great Gatsby” Essay

This passage is the last three paragraphs of the story. The passage is Nick’s thoughts on Gatsby and the future. This passage ends the story and concludes Nick’s narrative. It happens while Nick is going home to Minnesota in a train. It illustrates the main theme of the un-attainability of the American Dream. In the first sentence of the passage, Fitzgerald uses the word â€Å"brooding† to show the mood of Nick, the narrator. Brooding gives an impression of deep, dark thinking. Next, he talks about the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, a symbol that pervades the writing throughout the work. It symbolizes Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. Fitzgerald uses the word â€Å"wonder† to show Gatsby’s excitement for his future with Daisy. Fitzgerald also uses the word â€Å"obscurity† to describe the land west of New York. This gives the tone a careless tone because Nick doesn’t explain what he really means. Nick also proceeds to call the Midwest â€Å"the dark fields of the republic.† In the second paragraph, Fitzgerald mentions the green light again, calling it â€Å"the orgastic future.† This description shows the expectations everyone has for future, but only a few people attain it. The diction of the second paragraph adds to the tone of the passage, showing the un-attainability of the American Dream. The last paragraph is only one sentence and is also the last sentence in the book. Fitzgerald uses this sentence to show that the â€Å"current† is flowing towards the East, and hence corruption. He uses the word â€Å"ceaselessly† to describe the movement of time into the past. Nick’s physical movement west is also his movement into the past and traditional values. Fitzgerald’s word choice affects the mood of the passage in many ways. In the first paragraph, Nick sounds bitter about the un-attainability of Gatsby’s dream. He says that it was â€Å"so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it.† This sounds bitter and resentful. Nick then goes on to talk about how the dream that Gatsby strove for was fake and an illusion. He says that what he was really looking for was in the vast Midwest. In the second paragraph he becomes sentimental and dreamy, using ellipses to show how he keeps stretching for the American dream, which is just ahead of him. Nick turns even more sentimental in the third paragraph, saying that he is moving into  the past and embracing traditional values in spite of the overwhelming corruption. The Great Gatsby is dedicated to the theme of the decay and the unattainability of the American dream and the last three paragraphs of the book fully illustrate that theme.

Discipline: Training

This essay is to explain discipline to you and what it means to me and what it means to everyone. I will be covering discipline and what it means both definition and in my opinion. I will be giving three examples of both good and bad discipline. My examples of good shall include writing a long paper or essay and how it does take discipline, drive and determination to write and research. Soldiers like Special Forces and Rangers and the very hard training they go through, like selection or ranger selection. The time spent away from the ones we love during said training like AIT or basic training. Basic training consists of 10 weeks and AIT consists of 14 weeks. Selection and the Q course consists of almost 2 years. My examples of bad shall include people that quit because they want an easier way out, nothing in life that is worth it isn't easy. Rebellious teenagers that have to act out just because they think that they have a problem with authority and positive role models. People who are always getting in trouble is another example of bad discipline, rather they be getting in trouble because of lack of listening or just lack of caring, both lack discipline. This essay will then close with my conclusion on discipline. I will recap on the topics I have touched along with my final statements on it. A first good example about discipline is writing this essay. Discipline to take the time away from the 4 of July weekend to research and write this essay. The group have gotten in trouble for a few people that do not have discipline or follow rules, and the group got punished for it. The group know that the military believes in mass punishments because they believe disciplined soldiers will help undisciplined soldiers work on their discipline and military manners. But most of the time those undisciplined soldiers do not like to listen to other soldiers when trying to help them out or keep them in line. Some people might not write the essay but the few with discipline will write this essay and explained what discipline is. Discipline is a training to act in accordance with rules. Rules that us as US Army soldiers have to follow and maintain every day in our military career. Being in the military requires you to have discipline to be able to succeed in your military career. Soldiers like the ones in Ranger or Special Forces training require a lot of discipline to be able to succeed in their careers, to be able to succeed in all their training and make selection and the Q course. It is also that same discipline that brings those teams and individual soldiers home alive. Only soldiers with discipline are able to stay focus and succeed with the hard training they go through. I believe every single soldier going through BCT and AIT should look up to those soldiers going through all the hard training and their discipline. Just like the discipline that they have after having to leave our love ones for long periods of time to go through BCT and AIT. Some leaving their wives/husbands and kids to give them a better life and education. To show their kids that discipline is learn and earn at any age and any stage of your life. Some others to succeed in their personal career and continue with their education. To give their future families the best life or the life they weren’t able to have. It takes discipline to be able to be away and still be able to function with your military career. Examples of bad discipline include people that prefer to give up or quit because they think it is the easier way. How they think that by quitting you get out of anything faster and you won’t have to worry about it. They still don’t understand that being in the military it is not easy to just quit, it is not like any other job. You signed a contract with the government that willingly binds you to terms of service. After the government invest in your future the government expects you to fulfill your contract. We still have soldiers in this service that did not have the discipline to follow the rules and are stuck suffering though the corrective punishment until their contract is up or the government decides that the individual can not correct him or herself. Lack of discipline starts at home, some people do not have the necessary discipline before joining the military and since they believe they are adults they do not want to change or listen. Showing lack of discipline shows weakness within yourself, and that goes back to giving up and quitting. Just like rebellious teenagers are always getting in trouble because they feel like listening to authority is lame. People like that are the ones that when they join the military believe that they can get away with not listening or following rules because they have not been doing it back at home. Those same individuals are the same ones that are always getting in trouble and is because of them that just make everyone else life harder, and since they feel like they know better, they think that it is lright to keep acting the way they have been acting back at home. In conclusion, this essay has thoroughly discussed discipline and have expressed my opinion and my beliefs on the matter. This essay has given the definition along with a lot of examples. This essay has given three examples of good like the long training that soldiers have to go though and the discipline it takes to get there. The kind of discipline it takes to do something that does not come easy to all like writing this es say. This essay has also given three examples of bad discipline like people who quit because its easier. How some people have to cause trouble for others. The steps it takes from the day that were born and the others around us that raise us and teach us about being discipline make a huge difference in our lives, not just our lives but the lives around us too. It makes life easier for the whole. Being able to work together can turn a walk into a run during everyday projects and tasks. Working together takes discipline.
